Life is filled with bright, shiny objects that distract us, knock us off track, and keep us from knowing our truest needs. They pull us away from our core values and innate wisdom.
How do we figure out what really works for us?
I believe that we all have the ability to find those answers, even if we can’t always access that wisdom or follow through on it. It has to do with slowing down and listening deeply, two things that are not given much respect in this world of information overload. High speed, next generation wireless networks keep us always plugged in out there but not in here where it helps the most.
The essence of what I teach and embody in my work comes from learning to listen deeply to myself. It’s about paying mindful attention to my body and soul to figure out what works for me. I’ve learned how to give myself what I need to truly flourish and feel strong and vibrant. I feel so grateful to be able to share this learning with you.
I’m often asked how I got interested in massage and healing work, and there are two equally true answers. One is that I absolutely love helping people feel better; it is as much a part of me as my curly hair and petite stature. I learned at a very early age that I could help Dad relax at the end of a stressful day by standing behind his chair at the kitchen table, squeezing and kneading his shoulders with my tiny hands till he sighed with relief. And I considered it a personal triumph when I could engage the grouchy toll taker at my local Garden State Parkway exit and get her to smile. Seems that helping people feel better, lightening their load in some way, is what I was put on this earth to do. It’s my way of contributing to making it a better place for every living being, sending out small ripples into the common pond we all swim in.
The other true answer is that I have needed to do plenty of healing in my own life, from chronic digestive and sinus issues, hormone imbalances, and some serious bouts of depression and anxiety. After getting little help from doctors besides prescriptions, and knowing that drugs often create more problems than the one they seek to solve, I looked to more natural ways to relieve my various pains. I started to change how and what I ate and learned all I could about herbs, whole foods, essential oils, flower essences and other forms of energy medicine. I did yoga and experienced different forms of meditation. Through taking many forward and backward steps, I've experienced how hard it can be to make lasting lifestyle changes, even when motivated by physical and emotional discomfort. Learning how to be compassionate, get back on track when I’ve fallen off, and honor the small steps along the way are core concepts that I help others develop in their own wellness journeys.
How I Got To Where I Am
I received my BA in Liberal Studies from San Diego State University in 1981 with an emphasis in social sciences, followed by a series of uninspiring jobs. Then in 1986, I consciously stepped onto a path of spiritual discovery and took my first bodywork training in Shiatsu “just because it interests me.” I had no idea during those first few classes that it would change the course of my life, bringing me to a fulfilling career path and more congruent lifestyle than the 9 to 5 customer service job I left to start my full time practice.
After graduating from the New Jersey School of Massage in 1986 with certification in Shiatsu massage, I studied and was certified in Swedish massage; many more bodywork trainings followed, as well as a two-year course in Gestalt therapy to understand more fully how our emotions live in our tissues.
As my interest in spiritual healing deepened I became a Reiki Master/Teacher in 1998, and my desire to weave my Jewish faith more fully into my spiritual path led me to study Integrated Kabbalistic Healing® with Jason Shulman through his three year program at A Society of Souls. Kabbalah is a beautiful, deeply holistic system that helps anyone of any faith (or lack thereof) understand intimately how healed and whole we already are, in spite of -- and along with -- our very human foibles and challenges.
In 2010 I trained and became certified as a Wellness Coach with Wellcoaches, Inc. Wellcoaches is at the forefront of the revolution to move our healthcare system from an illness model to a wellness/prevention model, and is affiliated with both the American College of Sports Medicine and Harvard Medical School in those efforts. Coaching skills have rounded out my ability to help clients move forward in profound and lasting ways.
My training and personal experience in so many aspects of holistic health enable me to offer help to you on many levels. It is immensely satisfying to feel the release of a muscle spasm, help ease the emotional stress of an overloaded life, and support you in developing more inner peace and connection with the mysterious Source of all that exists. Every aspect of my work focuses on the qualities of simplicity, balance, compassion, and humor. I would love to help you learn to live more lightly in body, mind, and spirit.
